The BMW 1 Series – the smallest and least expensive BMW to date – has come tenth in a recent data list that tracks new car registrations for the UK. With 34,488 units registered in 2012, the little BMW has plenty of fans, especially when you consider that UK buyers prefer smaller hatchback-style cars. So why is it so popular?
Reliable performer
If you’re looking to buy a used 1 Series at a BMW auction, the good news is that there are plenty to choose from – it’s been a strong seller for the last three years – and the general consensus amongst owners and drivers is that it’s a reliable car when correctly cared for. But, of course, you’ll be thoroughly checking the car’s history and servicing documents before even considering bidding on it.
Unconventional looker
However, many still regard the 1 Series as rather unconventional in its styling, and while it doubtless shares the familiar BMW family styling traits, on initial release many found its truncated front and rear overhangs and heavily sculpted body panels somewhat difficult to swallow. For many, the 1 Series has been a “grower” in the looks department.
More readily to more immediately impress with the smallest BMW is its sublime rear-wheel drive chassis, powerful brakes and wide range of engines, from the frugal to the fast.
Formidable range
Popular with fleet buyers – who, during the height of the banking crisis recession, made up the biggest slice of new registrations – are the 116d EfficientDynamics models with their low CO2 rating making good sense for Benefit in Kind company car tax. Yes, these 116d models are extremely frugal – BMW quote a combined economy of 74.3mpg – but they are also punchy enough for more enthusiastic drivers, with 116bhp on tap.
More popular for private buyers, who thankfully have started buying cars again in the last twelve months, are the higher performance petrol 1 Series cars, which range from the 136bhp 116i to the 218bhp 125i, all the way up to the screaming M 135i with a full-blooded 320bhp pulsing through the rear wheels. The M 135i is widely regarded as one of the very finest driver’s cars in its class, and for around £40,000 – or less from the used market – you’ll be driving a small BMW that’s nearly as quick as a supercar!
Basic but satisfying
And it’s the driving style of the 1 Series that probably best sells the car to most new owners, as typically with BMW, the interior comfort is certainly on the rather basic end of the scale unless you spend a good deal extra on costly options. Cars from the lower end of the range won’t have leather upholstery and trim or sports seat and satellite navigation, so owners must take their rewards from the balanced and poised rear-wheel drive on-road experience. And it’s an experience that satisfies the more enthusiastic driver.
The badge of pride
Then, of course, there’s that BMW roundel to take into account; the blue and white circular badge that’s long shined with pride on BMW bonnets and boots. As a nation of brand-lovers, new and used car buyers in the UK want and need their friends and neighbours to know that they’re on the up and that they’re discerning enough to pick the right car. And the BMW brand has long been one of the right German brands to pick, especially now that the range is that much more accessible thanks to the lower-priced, yet still wonderfully BMW, 1 Series range.
