Which cars do musicians tune in with?
There are connections to be found in all aspects of life and certain things can go together in such a natural way sometimes. All over the world, there are people with a very keen interest in cars and there are just as many if not more who have a great love for music. The link between cars and music is undeniable and most drivers have their songs and albums they enjoy travelling to, especially when there is a long, open stretch of road to cruise along. Just as most of us need to get from A to B in the car so too do musicians and it is interesting to see the models they go for and any link it has with their career’s work.
Jamiroquai have sold in excess of 35 million albums across the globe since their 1993 debut ‘Emergency on Planet Earth’ and the acid jazz band’s lead singer has certainly grabbed the attention in a variety of ways in that time. Jay Kay has performed at the world’s top venues and it was his vocals that millions became familiar with on hits such as ‘Virtual Insanity’, ‘Deeper Underground’ and ‘Cosmic Girl’. Besides the alternative range of headgear he has in his collection he has dedicated much of his time to his love of cars. His Porsche 911 2.7 RS is guaranteed to turn heads thanks to its quality but also due to the striking purple colour. Also in Jay Kay’s garages are a Ferrari Vignale 330 GT, a BMW 2002 Bauer Cabriolet, a Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster, and an Aston Martin DB6 Mark 1 Volante, of which only 185 were ever made.
Back in 2003, former Dire Straits guitarist and vocalist Mark Knopfler was knocked off his 800cc Honda motorcycle by a car, breaking seven ribs, his collarbone and right shoulder. It is one of the less fortunate ways that Knopfler can be associated with motoring but the ‘Walk of Life’ and ‘Money For Nothing’ singer has been known over the years to be an avid collector of classic cars. Included in this array of vintage vehicles is a Maserati 300S, a top-of-the-range racing car from the 1950s, and Knopfler has even written a song entitled ‘The Car Was The One’.
Mötley Crüe have made many, many headlines in their career and the glam metal four-piece garnered a reputation back in the 80s for the hardest of rock star lifestyles. At the forefront of the Crüe has almost always been Vince Neil and the Californian singer has had a very up and down time with cars in his life. Neil’s love of motors has seen him purchase some elite models, including the Rolls-Royce he found himself engaging in a heated exchange with a valet over in Las Vegas last year. In 1984, he was drunk behind the wheel of his De Tomaso Pantera sports car when drummer Razzle from the band Hanoi Rocks was killed in a crash while travelling with him.
Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez has been one of the world’s most desired women in her career so maybe it is understandable that she has spent more time being chauffeured than driving. However, besides endorsing the Fiat 500 and reportedly being paid $250,000 to open a showroom in Dubai she has owned some cars at the top of the tree when it comes to star quality. Included in Lopez’ collection over the years have been the Aston Martin DB7 and the Lotus Elise.
