Mercedes E300 Bluetec Hybrid Review

The E300, one of the more environmentally friendly new cars 2012 will see the market launch of, features record efficiency values of 4.2 litres of diesel/100 km, average economy of 67.2 mpg and CO2emissions of 109 g/km, accompanied by increased torque and power output. It is the most efficient luxury class car in the world, claims Mercedes-Benz, and this is definitely true for its own models. The E250 CDI, on which the E300 BlueTec Hybrid is based, can manage only 54.3 mpg and emits 136 g/km.

The E300 is the company’s first diesel-electric model. It combines the 2.1-litre engine from the E250 CDI with a small electric motor and a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The small lithium-ion battery powered motor doesn’t impose any compromises on space and, according to reviews, offers an impressive driving experience thanks to start/stop, regenerative braking, the boost effect, all-electric driving and sailing – a mode that switches the drive train to electric power alone at up 100 mph to conserve fuel.

Mercedes-Benz is setting new standards in the luxury-class business cars segment. The E300 BlueTec Hybrid’s 4-cylinder diesel engine generates 150 kW (204 hp) of output and 500 Nm of torque and the electric motor boasts 20 kW and 250 Nm. Together they provide the car with a 0-62 mph, a time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph.

While being more fuel-efficient, the E300 BlueTec Hybrid still has the look of a luxurious premium model which is essential for business cars. The E300 looks like any other E-Class besides a few hybrid badges on the boot and the centre console.

The overall concept of the car is harmonious. It delivers a more environmentally compatible car without compromising safety, comfort and serene driving enjoyment. And it’s not just about the E-Class. Mercedes-Benz is planning to roll out this technology across their entire C, E and S ranges.
“Modular hybrid technology opens up the way for us to rapidly add hybrid models to other model series,” explained Professor Dr. Thomas Weber, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
“With a clear focus on the varying needs of the worldwide markets, we are able to offer precisely the models that our customers require. This is because the intelligent, modular hybrid concept has a major advantage: no modifications to the bodyshell are required, the hybrid module can be used flexibly in other model series and there will be right-hand drive versions apart from the diesel and petrol models.”

The car will be available as a saloon and estate and will arrive in European showrooms in the third quarter of 2012.
